Mayor Georgine Welo

In 1979, I left my parent’s farm and moved to  South Euclid to marry my husband, Carter, and help start his business. He’s owned a hardware store on main street for 40 years, and the love I had for my new hometown kept growing along with our family. Encouraged by a group of residents, I was elected to City Council and became Mayor on January 1, 2004 – the first woman to hold the position. Over the past decade hard times hit our community. One thing has been clear, though, there is a spirit and a creativity here that has produced generations of incredible people. There is rich cultural and architectural diversity; you can walk anywhere; we’re close to everything; the people are friendly; it’s uniquely affordable and incredibly beautiful.

Education

From daycares to youth centers and primary schools to higher education, South Euclid offers residents the opportunity to achieve their academic goals right here at home. Established in 1924, the South Euclid Lyndhurst School District serves the communities of South Euclid, Lyndhurst, and Richmond Heights. With modern facilities and a diverse population of approximately 3,500 students, the District prides itself on providing an array of academic and extra-curricular activities. Founded in 1922, Notre Dame College provides a private liberal arts education to equip students with personal and professional skills that help them chase their passions and change the world.

Safety

South Euclid maintains modern, highly trained, and well equipped Police and Fire Departments, with a current authorized strength of 37 police officers and 33 firefighters. Each department works closely with residents and businesses to address safety and neighborhood quality-of-life issues. Leading the charge for regionalism, South Euclid worked to establish the Heights-Hillcrest Communications Center bringing five cities together to provide improved public safety dispatch services in 2017.

Health & Wellness

Cleveland is known for leading the nation’s healthcare systems, and South Euclid residents benefit greatly from nearby medical resources. University Hospitals Suburban Health Center is an outpatient health center staffed by more than 140 physicians representing more than 30 medical specialties. Senders Pediatrics provides exceptional care to parents as they navigate the twists and turns experienced by their children along the path to adulthood. The Community Partnership on Aging promotes independence, a healthy lifestyle, community involvement, and opportunities for personal growth for older adults, as well as support for family caregivers.

One South Euclid

One South Euclid (OSE) is a non-profit community development corporation that promotes sustainable economic, social, and cultural connections. They support the restoration of dilapidated properties back to productive use and their Neighborhood Grant Program helps to improve residential and commercial properties and increase community engagement. OSE is driven by a volunteer board of directors that reflects South Euclid’s diversity, and works closely with the City of South Euclid to ensure a thriving and vibrant community.

Parks & Recreation

Public parks and recreational activities are abundant in South Euclid. A ribbon of geologic beauty known as Euclid Creek Reservation runs through the northern border of our city and ultimately empties into Lake Erie. One of 18 nature preserves managed by Cleveland Metroparks, the reservation is a popular urban oasis for picnicking, fitness, and other recreational opportunities in a natural setting. Residents can cool off at Bexley Pool, play fetch at Quarry Dog Park, and spot wildlife at Langerdale Marsh all in a day. Amenities also include 9 community gardens where gardeners grow fresh produce and 4 pockets parks for midday meditation.

Arts & Culture

Just minutes from University Circle and its world-renowned museums, South Euclid shares in Cleveland’s rich cultural history and appreciation of the arts. The Museum of American Porcelain Art in the former Telling estate on Mayfield Road boasts an unparalleled collection of rare porcelain artwork from the middle to late 20th Century. We gather every year for events like the Memorial Day Parade, Rock the Block, Juneteenth, and Holiday Lighting Ceremony, to celebrate the authenticity of our community. South Euclid also recognizes the power of public art and continues to support local artists who transform ordinary spaces into stunning works of art.

Diversity & Inclusion

South Euclid’s diversity work is rooted in the principles of equity, access, inclusion, opportunity and cultural competence. These principles inform efforts underway to improve city policies, staffing and hiring, training, communications, services and outreach. For the community, this work is also improving our human services, public safety, education, economic development and civic engagement, with the goal of maintaining South Euclid as an attractive, vital and vibrant place to live, work and play.

South Euclid's story begins...

at the intersection of two trails in the early years of Cleveland’s settlement. Various indigenous tribes roamed the land that would eventually become Euclid Township. The area teamed with wildlife and natural resources giving rise to permanent establishments and incorporated territories. The intersection of what is now Mayfield and Green Roads was once the intersection of two indigenous trails and referred to as “South Euclid” by settlers. Farming was the main industry of the time but transitioned to bluestone quarries as the town developed. The turn of the 20th Century saw more frequent talk of making South Euclid a real village, and on October 13, 1917 the Village of South Euclid was officially recognized.
