HEIGHTS AREA SPECIAL RESCUE TEAM
The South Euclid Fire Department is a member of the Heights Area Special Rescue Team (a.k.a. HASRT). HASRT is comprised of South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Shaker Heights, and Beachwood Fire Departments. Currently, there are 51 members on the team with 8 from South Euclid. HASRT is a team of highly motivated, action oriented fire-fighters that serve voluntarily. The Euclid Fire department joined the HASRT Team in late 2007 and there members have begun training with the entire team. During 2008 they will continue with additional training needed to acquire the certifications of the rest of the team members.
Because fire departments are historically the “ones to call when you don’t know who else to call,” HASRT was established so fire departments could be better prepared to handle out of the ordinary rescue incidents. HASRT members are trained to handle a variety of different rescue situations including but not limited to high angle rope rescue, trench collapse rescue, confined space entry and rescue, ice rescue and tower rescue & mud rescue. Several members of the HASRT team also part of the Ohio Region 2 Structural Collapse Team.
HASRT is overseen by the Chiefs of the 5 fire departments and it is their guidance and direction that keep the team proactive. They are also responsible for setting and approving the yearly budget. The day-to-day operation of HASRT is the responsibility of Lt. Pat Sweeney of the Shaker Heights Fire Department. Each member city has a team leader who is responsible for organizing HASRT activity in their respective city.
Members of HASRT are currently trained at various levels of competence in each discipline. The team goal beginning in 2007 is to start training members to the level of “Technician” in each area. This is the highest level of training available in rescue operations.
